City releases results of Lansdowne consultations
Posted Nov 13, 2009 By EMC NewsEMC News - City councillors received a detailed analysis of feedback received during the public consultations on the Lansdowne Partnership Plan (LPP).
Nik Nanos, President and CEO of Nanos Research, a respected Ottawa-based public research firm, presented a Public Consultations Findings Report, which summarizes feedback provided from more than 3,000 Ottawa residents during the consultations. Public feedback came through several channels, including comment forms filled out at public meetings, online consultations via Ottawa Talks, focus groups, a public opinion telephone survey and the City's 3-1-1 Call Centre.
"The key finding from these consultations is that the more people know about the proposal, the more supportive of it they are," said mayor Larry O'Brien. "The next step in the process has to be council's approval of the plan in order to allow staff and our partners to begin working to return Lansdowne to its former glory."
More than 90 per cent of Ottawa residents were aware of the plan to redevelop Lansdowne Park. Overall, impressions were generally split. The majority of those asked for their impressions on the LPP were neutral (49.6 per cent) with 22.5 per cent citing a negative impression compared to 18.7 per cent of residents responding positively to the proposal.
Impressions of the plan became more favourable the farther away from Lansdowne Park residents lived. Positive comments were also higher among residents who claimed to have more knowledge about the Lansdowne Partnership Plan. Most residents (53 per cent) feel it's time to move forward, with the top unprompted piece of advice for City Council being "just do it."
"Council directed staff to work with the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group to negotiate a partnership agreement and to present the results of these negotiations to the public for comment," said city manager Kent Kirkpatrick.
Residents will have an additional opportunity to share their comments on the LPP when council sits as Committee of the Whole on Nov. 12 and 13 to hear public delegations on the plan and the Public Consultations Findings Report.
