West Carleton snowmobile trails finally fully open

Posted Jan 19, 2012 By Sherry Haaima

EMC Lifestyles - The prayers of local winter enthusiasts have been answered and among those rejoicing are members of the West Carleton Snowmobile Trails Association.

The association reports trail status has been changed from limited to open.

"All of the trails are open. It looks like it's going to be a great snowmobiling season," says Greg Veldhuizen, president of the association.

"The trails are in good shape, considering we've only had a couple weeks of snow."

Work done in late fall/early winter to install culverts and repair trails has made for an even better experience for snowmobilers.

Veldhuizen reminds riders that trail permits must be purchased before they make use of the system.

Funds collected from the permits go towards maintaining the trails.

"You need to get a permit before you go on the trail," he says.

Permit numbers are definitely down of late, as last year 478 were sold, compared to some 700 four years ago.

The 'forgotten trail' or W17, the trail from Becks road to Newtown road has changed to Ferry Road, which makes for less road driving.

The club says it's waiting for Cavanagh Construction to install the culvert and then this trail will be open.

Also W21, from West Carleton Township Hall until Thomas Dolan is closed, waiting for landowner permission and then it will be also open.

BE SAFE

Meanwhile, the Ontario Provincial Police and Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs have launched provincial Snowmobile Safety Week, Jan. 15-21, and are reminding snowmobilers that arriving home safely after every ride means making smart choices.

The groups say the province-wide campaign is an excellent opportunity for riders to tune up their sledding habits with a greater focus on the well-being of other snowmobilers as well as their own personal safety.

Ice safety should be top of mind, as well, say police.

Not all waterways are frozen and users should be cautious.

Lanark County OPP reported two Drummond North Elmsley men were returned safe and sound after they were rescued from Mississippi Lake between Perth and Carleton Place on Jan. 12.

Police responded to a report of an ATV that had broken through the ice and while on that call, a nearby snowmobiler broke through as well.
